The giant panda, also called the panda, is one of the world’s rarest animals. Only about 1,000 of these black-and-white relatives of bears survive in the wild. Pandas live in bamboo forests in southwestern China. Pandas eat a diet of bamboo shoots and leaves. Pandas spend about 12 hours a day eating. Pandas must spend a lot of time eating because they digest only about a fifth of what they eat and bamboo is not very nutritious.
